ATM Cave Tour Belize – Actun Tunichil Muknal Adventure

Special Tour

Explore the legendary Actun Tunichil Muknal—a sacred Maya cave filled with ancient artifacts, crystalized skeletons, and breathtaking underground chambers.

The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave) Tour is one of Belize’s most thrilling and unforgettable adventures. This full-day experience combines hiking, river crossings, cave exploration, Maya history, and archaeology deep within the Belize jungle near San Ignacio. Due to the nature of the tour, a good level of physical fitness is required, and being comfortable in the water is highly recommended.

Located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, the ATM Cave Archaeological Reserve offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore an ancient Maya ceremonial cave once believed to be an entrance to “Xibalba,” the Maya underworld. Your adventure begins with a scenic 30-minute jungle hike featuring several river crossings before arriving at the cave entrance. A short swim of approximately 15 feet grants access to the cave system, where your journey into the underground world begins.

Guided only by headlamps, you will navigate through underground rivers, crystal chambers, and limestone passages as your expert guide shares the fascinating history, mythology, and archaeological significance of the cave. Deep within the cave lies the main ceremonial chamber, home to ancient Maya artifacts, sacrificial altars, pottery, and the famous calcified skeletal remains known as the “Crystal Maiden.”

The ATM Cave Tour is far more than a sightseeing excursion — it is an immersive adventure into one of the most sacred and important archaeological sites in Belize. From breathtaking cave formations to powerful stories of ancient Maya rituals and ceremonies, this experience leaves visitors with unforgettable memories and stories that last a lifetime.
